TimeSplitters for PS2 is an FPS developed by Free Radical Design. The game is often compared to GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, as Free Radical Design was founded by a group of former employees who developed these games. As the name suggests, each game contains a time travel element that allows players to fight in a time war in various locations located over several centuries.

The look of the series is considerably more stylized than most modern first-person shooters, with character models and expressions emphasizing more cartoony qualities and comic book-inspired design. Many characters are parodies of established pop culture stereotypes (such as the aristocratic English explorer or the suave secret agent). Many aspects of the series also focus on often surreal and suicidal humor. The main antagonist in each game is the TimeSplitters, a race of aliens.
