4J Studios

4J Studios is a Scottish game development studio founded in 2005, which has made a name for itself primarily through porting popular PC games to consoles. Its greatest success came from its collaboration on the Minecraft franchise, for which it created several console editions.

The studio was founded by developers with experience in the British games industry and gradually specialised in porting, technical optimisation and the development of console versions of games. Its work has appeared on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo consoles.

A key project was Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, which brought Mojang’s popular sandbox game to the Xbox 360. 4J Studios had to adapt the original PC concept to console controls, hardware performance and gameplay on a TV screen.

The Xbox 360 version was a huge success and was followed by further editions. 4J Studios worked on Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, PlayStation 3 Edition, PlayStation 4 Edition, PlayStation Vita Edition, Wii U Edition and other console versions.

These editions are now often referred to collectively as Legacy Console Editions. Alongside the classic building, mining and survival gameplay, they offered controls adapted for a gamepad and, on some consoles, also local split-screen multiplayer.

Even before Minecraft, 4J Studios had been involved in porting several well-known games from Rare. These included Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie for Xbox Live Arcade, which brought the original Nintendo 64 games to the Xbox 360 in a remastered form.

The studio also created a remastered Xbox 360 version of the legendary FPS Perfect Dark. This offered updated graphics at a higher resolution and other technical improvements whilst retaining the core elements of the original Nintendo 64 game.

4J Studios’ history also includes work on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Overlord, where the studio contributed to specific console versions and technical adaptations.

After years of working on Minecraft, the studio also began to invest more in its own projects and technologies. It thus continues to draw on the experience gained whilst developing large-scale, multi-platform games.

Thanks to the console versions of Minecraft and its work on Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, 4J Studios has established itself as one of the best-known British developers specialising in high-quality console ports and the technical adaptation of video games.
