Arc System Works

Arc System Works is a Japanese development studio founded in 1988 in Yokohama. It is one of the world’s leading developers of fighting games and has made a name for itself with its sophisticated combat systems, unique anime-style art and cutting-edge technical execution. As well as developing games, it also acts as a publisher and collaborates with leading global companies.

The studio’s best-known franchise is the Guilty Gear series, which debuted in 1998. The games gained immense popularity thanks to their fast-paced combat, original characters, sophisticated combos and hand-drawn graphics, which later evolved into a unique 3D style reminiscent of anime. The latest instalments, such as Guilty Gear -Strive-, are among the highest-rated fighting games of today.

Another successful series is BlazBlue, which combines a complex combat system, an expansive storyline and distinctive anime-style visuals. The studio is also behind the modern sequels to the River City (Kunio-kun) series, which blends beat ’em up action with RPG elements and co-operative play.

Arc System Works has also contributed to the development of several licensed fighting games, the most successful of which is Dragon Ball FighterZ, created in collaboration with Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game has earned acclaim for its faithful anime graphics, dynamic combat and excellent character balance. The studio has also contributed to the games Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, DNF Duel and Granblue Fantasy Versus.

Arc System Works is renowned for its innovations in the fighting game genre, its precise balancing of combat mechanics and its cutting-edge visual presentation. Their games are regularly featured as main titles in global e-sports tournaments and have influenced the development of the entire genre.
