Argonaut Games

Argonaut Games was a British game studio founded in 1982 by programmer Jez San. It was one of the gaming industry’s most significant technological pioneers and became famous for developing innovative 3D technologies that helped take video games to a new level.

The studio gained worldwide attention through its collaboration with Nintendo on the legendary game Star Fox for the Super Nintendo. Argonaut created the revolutionary Super FX chip, which enabled the console to display smooth 3D graphics and became one of the greatest technological milestones of its time.

Among the studio’s best-known games are the platformer Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, its sequel Croc 2, the action shooter Alien Resurrection, the stylish action game I-Ninja, the racing title Buck Bumble, and the futuristic action game SWAT: Global Strike Team. The studio wasn’t afraid to experiment with various genres and regularly introduced technical innovations.

Games from Argonaut Games were known for their high-quality 3D graphics, sophisticated gameplay mechanics, and original ideas. Above all, the Croc series became one of the most popular platformers of the first-generation PlayStation era and gained millions of fans around the world.

In 2004, the studio ceased operations due to financial difficulties. Nevertheless, its legacy remains a significant part of video game history. Thanks to its technological innovations and a number of unforgettable titles, Argonaut Games is still considered one of the most influential British studios of the 1990s.
