Big Bad Wolf
Brand's website: Big Bad WolfBig Bad Wolf Studio is a French game development studio founded in 2015 in Bordeaux, France. It focuses primarily on story-driven RPGs and adventure games, in which dialogue, the player’s decisions and the consequences of their actions play a key role.
The studio was founded by experienced developers who had previously worked on various well-known game projects. From the outset, Big Bad Wolf has focused on games that combine traditional storytelling with RPG mechanics, character development and branching dialogue.
The studio’s first major project was The Council. This narrative-driven RPG takes players to a mysterious island, where the protagonist, Louis de Richet, arrives in 1793 to search for his missing mother.
On the island, he encounters a number of historical figures, including, for example, George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte. Gradually, he becomes entangled in political intrigues, secret conspiracies and events that have far greater significance than initially appears.
The Council differs from classic adventure games in its sophisticated system of skills and dialogue duels. The player can develop abilities related, for example, to diplomacy, manipulation or investigation, and subsequently use them during conversations.
Decisions can have long-term consequences, and some mistakes cannot simply be undone. The story can therefore unfold in different directions depending on the player’s choices.
Another significant project is Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, set in the world of the tabletop RPG World of Darkness. Players follow the stories of three vampires belonging to different clans of the Boston Camarilla.
Each of the main characters has their own abilities, personality and vampiric disciplines. During their investigations, players must gather information, manipulate other characters and decide whom they can trust.
Swansong places considerably greater emphasis on investigation, dialogue and RPG systems than on traditional action-based combat. Choices can influence the fates of individual characters as well as the further development of the story.
Big Bad Wolf is thus establishing itself as a studio specialising in games where the most important elements are not quick reflexes, but above all decision-making, character psychology, exploration and information management.
Thanks to the games The Council and Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, Big Bad Wolf has carved out its own niche amongst European studios specialising in narrative-driven RPGs and adventure games with a distinctive system of choices and consequences.
