Bulwark Studios

Bulwark Studios is a French game development studio founded in 2012. It focuses primarily on strategy, tactical and management games, in which it combines sophisticated game systems with a distinctive atmosphere and a sci-fi setting.

The studio’s best-known project is Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, a turn-based tactical strategy game set in the dark sci-fi universe of Warhammer 40,000.

The player takes command of the Adeptus Mechanicus units, a technology-focused faction of the Imperium of Man. The expedition heads to the planet Silva Tenebris, where ancient tombs of the dangerous Necrons have been discovered.

Mechanicus combines turn-based tactical combat, unit management and RPG elements. Tech-Priests can gradually be equipped with new weapons, implants and technologies that significantly alter their abilities and utility on the battlefield.

Decisions made during individual missions can influence the further course of the campaign. The gradual awakening of the Necrons also plays an important role – the longer the expedition continues, the greater the danger facing the player.

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus was released on PC and subsequently ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, making the turn-based strategy game accessible to console players as well.

Another major project from Bulwark Studios is IXION, a vast sci-fi base-building and survival strategy game. In it, the player manages the enormous space station Tiqqun, which becomes the new home for the surviving human race following catastrophic events.

In IXION, players must construct new sections of the station, generate energy, gather resources and attend to the inhabitants’ needs. At the same time, the player sends out expeditions into space to search for resources and new avenues for the survival of human civilisation.

The studio subsequently returned to the world of Warhammer 40,000 with the project Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II, which builds on the original tactical strategy game and expands the conflict between the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Necrons.

Thanks to its projects, Bulwark Studios has established itself as a developer specialising in more complex strategy games with a strong emphasis on narrative and atmosphere.

Thanks to the games Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus and IXION, Bulwark Studios ranks among the most interesting European strategy studios that have successfully ported their projects from PC to gaming consoles.
