Bungie Software
Brand's website: Bungie SoftwareBungie is one of the most influential game studios in history. It was founded in 1991 by Alex Seropian in Chicago, USA, and initially developed games primarily for Apple Macintosh computers. From its very beginnings, the studio earned a reputation as an innovative developer that succeeded in combining a sophisticated storyline, top-class gameplay and cutting-edge technology.
Its first major success was the sci-fi trilogy Marathon, which offered a story that was unusually sophisticated for its time, high-quality enemy AI and an atmospheric setting. This was followed by the Myth and Oni series, which further cemented the studio’s reputation amongst fans of both action and strategy games.
A major turning point came in 2000, when Bungie was acquired by Microsoft. A year later, Halo: Combat Evolved was released, becoming the flagship title for the new Xbox console. The Halo series revolutionised console first-person shooters thanks to its intuitive controls, intelligent enemies, sophisticated multiplayer and the unforgettable story of the Master Chief. Bungie subsequently created the successful sequels Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.
In 2007, the studio regained its independence and, after completing the Halo series, began work on a new franchise. This resulted in the release of the online action game Destiny in 2014, which combined elements of FPS, RPG and MMO into a vast shared world. This success was followed by the sequel Destiny 2, which is regularly updated with new content and ranks among today’s most-played online shooters.
In 2022, Bungie became part of Sony Interactive Entertainment, whilst retaining a high degree of creative independence. The studio continues to develop the Destiny series, is preparing the return of the Marathon franchise, and, even after more than three decades, remains one of the most respected developers of action games. Thanks to the Halo and Destiny series, Bungie has left an indelible mark on the history of video games and has significantly influenced the form of modern FPS titles.
