Creative Edge Software

Brand's website: Creative Edge Software

Creative Edge Software was a British development studio founded in 1986 in Manchester. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was one of the best-known independent developers, creating games for platforms such as the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS, PlayStation and other systems.

It achieved its greatest success with the original strategy game Baldies, which combined base-building, unit management and real-time territory conquest. Thanks to its offbeat humour, accessible gameplay and original sci-fi world, the game gained popularity on both PC and consoles, including the PlayStation.

Other well-known titles from the studio include the sci-fi action game Cyberwar, the arcade adaptation Smash T.V., the platformer Soul of a Robot, the racing game Road Blasters, the puzzle game Deflektor and the sports title European Superleague. The studio was also involved in porting a number of arcade games to home computers and consoles.

Creative Edge Software was renowned for its technical prowess, high-quality ports and ability to create games across a variety of genres – from strategy and action games to sports and racing titles. As a result, it collaborated with major publishers such as Virgin Interactive, Mindscape, Domark, Time Warner Interactive and GT Interactive.

Although the studio ceased operations at the turn of the millennium, its games, particularly Baldies, remain a beloved part of the history of the British games industry and a reminder of the era of classic strategy and arcade titles
