Deck13 Interactive

Deck13 Interactive is a German development studio based in Frankfurt am Main, which has made a name for itself primarily through the creation of action RPGs. Its best-known games include The Surge, The Surge 2, Atlas Fallen and also Lords of the Fallen, on which it collaborated with CI Games.

The studio’s history dates back to the start of the new millennium, and its work has gradually shifted from adventure games and more traditional RPGs towards more challenging action titles.

⚔️ Lords of the Fallen

A significant milestone in Deck13’s history was Lords of the Fallen from 2014. This dark fantasy action RPG was developed in collaboration with CI Games and featured a combat system based on precise timing of attacks, dodges and defences.

Players take on the role of the warrior Harkyn, who battles against the demonic Rhogar army. The title helped Deck13 establish itself more firmly amongst studios specialising in challenging action RPGs.

🤖 The Surge

The studio subsequently drew on its experience from E Lords of the FallenE to create its own franchise, The Surge. Instead of classic fantasy, the game is set in a dark sci-fi world of the future.

The main protagonist, Warren, uses an industrial exoskeleton to battle machines and other dangerous foes. A distinctive feature is the ability to target specific body parts of enemies and obtain equipment from them.

The success of the first instalment led to the creation of The Surge 2, which expanded the combat system, equipment options and environmental exploration.

🏜️ Atlas Fallen

Another major project from Deck13 is Atlas Fallen, an action RPG set in a vast, sandy fantasy world.

Compared to The Surge, the gameplay focuses more on fast movement, dynamic combat and the use of supernatural abilities. Players can slide across the sand, battle gigantic monsters and gradually acquire new abilities.

Atlas Fallen thus showcases a different side to Deck13’s work and moves the studio away from the slower pace of its previous action RPGs towards faster-paced combat and more open-ended exploration.

🎮 From adventure games to action RPGs

Throughout its history, Deck13 has been involved in a range of different projects. Older titles include, for example, Ankh, Jack Keane and Venetica.

It is precisely the studio’s evolution from classic adventure games through fantasy RPGs to modern action games that demonstrates its relatively broad experience across genres.

Currently, however, the name Deck13 Interactive is primarily associated with more challenging action RPGs and sophisticated combat systems. Games such as Lords of the Fallen, The Surge, The Surge 2 and Atlas Fallen are among the most significant projects in the German studio’s history.
