DreamFactory

DreamFactory Co., Ltd. is a Japanese games studio founded in 1995 by Masa Akiman, a former producer at Capcom, and Seiichi Ishii, a developer who helped create the Virtua Fighter series. From the outset, the studio focused primarily on developing fighting games, action titles and games utilising advanced 3D technology.

The studio’s first major success was the fighting game Tobal No. 1, released in 1996 exclusively for the PlayStation. The game impressed with its fluid 3D combat, the ability to move in all directions, and the inclusion of a demo version of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII, which contributed significantly to its commercial success. This was followed by the sequel Tobal 2, which is still regarded today as one of the best 3D fighting games of its era.

Another notable title was Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring, which, in addition to original fighters, also featured guest characters from the world of Final Fantasy VII, such as Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth. The game became particularly popular amongst fans of fighting games and the Final Fantasy series.

For the PlayStation 2 console, the studio developed the action title The Bouncer, which was among the first games released for this platform. It offered cinematic presentation, detailed graphics and dynamic combat. Although it received mixed reviews, it demonstrated the technical capabilities of the new generation of consoles. The studio’s other well-known projects include Kakuto Chojin, Spikeout: Battle Street, Demolition Girl and collaborations on other arcade games.

Throughout its history, DreamFactory has built a reputation as a studio capable of creating technically advanced fighting games with sophisticated combat systems. Thanks to its close collaboration with Square (later Square Enix) and the experience of former Capcom developers, it ranks among the leading Japanese studios that helped drive the development of 3D fighting games on PlayStation consoles.

Although DreamFactory is not one of the largest developers today, its games Tobal, Ehrgeiz and The Bouncer are still prized by fans of classic Japanese fighting games and represent an important part of the history of the PlayStation consoles.
