DreamWorks Interactive

DreamWorks Interactive was an American game development studio founded in 1995 as a joint venture between the film studio DreamWorks SKG and Microsoft. Based in Los Angeles, the studio focused on developing ambitious games for both PC and consoles, often inspired by well-known film franchises. In 2000, the studio was acquired by Electronic Arts, which renamed it EA Los Angeles.

The studio achieved its greatest success with the Medal of Honour series, the first instalment of which for the PlayStation was released in 1999. The renowned director Steven Spielberg was also involved in the game’s development, aiming to offer players an authentic perspective on the events of the Second World War. The game’s success laid the foundations for one of the most famous military series of all time.

Other notable projects from the studio include Jurassic Park: Trespasser, a pioneering first-person action game with advanced physics; the horror FPS Clive Barker’s Undying, acclaimed for its atmosphere and storyline; and the adventure game Someone’s in the Kitchen!. The studio also worked on several games based on DreamWorks film licences.

DreamWorks Interactive was renowned for its technological innovations, cinematic presentation and emphasis on a realistic atmosphere. Although some of its projects were ahead of their time and not commercially successful, they later achieved cult status amongst gamers.

Although the DreamWorks Interactive brand ceased to exist following its acquisition by Electronic Arts, its legacy lives on, primarily thanks to the Medal of Honor series, which significantly influenced the development of modern military shooters and established the studio as one of the leading game developers of the 1990s.
