Edge of Reality

Brand's website: Edge of Reality

Edge of Reality was an American video game development studio founded in 1998 in Austin, Texas. During its existence, it focused on in-house development, licensed titles and, above all, porting well-known games to other console platforms.

Some of the studio’s first major projects were linked to the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series. Edge of Reality created versions of the first games in the series for the Nintendo 64, whilst the original versions were developed by Neversoft. The studio had to adapt the games to the console’s different hardware whilst retaining the characteristic skateboarding gameplay.

Edge of Reality also worked on the console versions of the The Sims series. For example, it contributed to The Sims: Bustin’ Out, where it collaborated with Maxis to port the popular life simulation game to consoles.

Well-known in-house projects include Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, an action-adventure game developed for Activision. Players control the adventurer Pitfall Harry on a journey through a jungle full of enemies, traps, platforming sections and puzzles.

The studio also created Over the Hedge, a video game based on the DreamWorks animated film. This action-adventure game allows players to control several well-known animal characters and combines combat, exploration and co-operative elements.

Another licensed project was The Incredible Hulk, an action game featuring a more open-world urban environment and extensive destruction. Players can utilise the Hulk’s immense physical strength to destroy enemies, vehicles and parts of the surrounding environment.

Edge of Reality also gained experience with BioWare’s major RPG franchises. The studio contributed to the console versions of games set in the worlds of Dragon Age and Mass Effect, primarily through technical collaboration and porting to other platforms.

The most notable in-house project from the later period was Loadout, a free-to-play third-person action shooter. Its main feature was an extensive weapon customisation system, which allowed players to combine different barrels, ammunition, triggers and other components.

Loadout was also known for its exaggeratedly brutal yet comically presented style. During combat, characters sustained extreme injuries, which were presented in a highly stylised manner.

Thanks to games such as Loadout, Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, The Incredible Hulk, Over the Hedge and its work on the console versions of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Edge of Reality ranks amongst the interesting American studios that, throughout their history, have combined original development with the porting of major game franchises.
