Epic Games

Epic Games is one of the world’s leading game studios. The company was founded in 1991 by the American programmer Tim Sweeney under the name Potomac Computer Systems, which was soon changed to Epic MegaGames. In 1999, the company adopted its current name, Epic Games. The company is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina.

The studio’s first major success was the action series Unreal, which became famous not only for its fast-paced gameplay but also for its revolutionary graphics. At the same time, the Unreal Engine was developed, a game engine that has become one of the most widely used development tools in the world. Hundreds of successful games from many different studios have been created using its technology.

In 2006, Epic Games launched the Gears of War series, which immediately became one of the biggest Xbox exclusives. Thanks to its innovative cover system, intense combat and cinematic presentation, the series became one of the hallmarks of the Xbox 360 and later continued on newer generations of consoles.

However, its biggest global phenomenon came in 2017 with the release of Fortnite. Originally a co-op game, it was transformed by the Battle Royale mode into one of the most-played video games in history. In addition to game development, Epic Games also operates the Epic Games Store, a digital store for PC video games that competes with the Steam platform. The company is also continuing to develop Unreal Engine 5, which is at the cutting edge of gaming technology and is used by developers worldwide not only for video games, but also for film production, architecture and the automotive industry.

Thanks to the Unreal, Gears of War, Infinity Blade and Fortnite series, and the ongoing development of Unreal Engine, Epic Games ranks among the most influential companies in the history of video games and has significantly shaped the modern gaming industry.
