Good Science Studio
Good Science Studio was a British development studio owned by Microsoft Studios, founded in 2009 in Leamington Spa, England. The studio was established with the aim of developing games using Kinect technology, which allowed games to be controlled using body movements without the need for a traditional controller.
The studio’s best-known project was the game Kinect Star Wars, released in 2012 exclusively for the Xbox 360. In it, players could become Jedi Knights, wield a lightsaber and use the Force through their own movements, pilot iconic vehicles from the Star Wars universe, or play several different game modes designed for the whole family.
Good Science Studio worked closely with LucasArts and Microsoft to make the most of the Kinect sensor’s capabilities. The developers focused on intuitive motion controls and creating an experience that would immerse players as deeply as possible in the Star Wars universe.
Following the release of Kinect Star Wars, the studio also worked on other prototypes and technologies for Kinect, though most of these projects never made it to market. With interest in motion controls gradually waning, the studio was closed in 2014 as part of a reorganisation of Microsoft Studios.
Although Good Science Studio’s existence was relatively short-lived, it remains associated with one of the best-known games to utilise Kinect technology. The studio represents a significant part of the period when Microsoft was striving to establish motion controls as the future of home entertainment.
