Grip Digital
Brand's website: Grip DigitalGrip Digital was a Czech game development studio founded in 2009 in Prague. It focused on developing its own projects, collaborating with independent creators and, above all, on porting games between PC and PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles.
The studio gradually built a reputation as an experienced partner for smaller developers who wanted to bring their originally PC-based games to console players as well. Grip Digital handled the technical adaptations, optimisation, gamepad controls and other aspects necessary for release on a new platform.
Well-known titles associated with the studio include Tower of Guns, a fast-paced FPS combining classic shooting with procedurally generated elements and roguelike mechanics. Grip Digital collaborated with the original developer, Terrible Posture Games, on the console versions of the game.
This collaboration later continued with Mothergunship, an action-packed FPS centred on battling vast hordes of robotic enemies. One of the game’s key features is the ability to assemble your own weapons from various components, creating highly unusual combinations.
Another significant project is The Solus Project, a sci-fi survival adventure game developed in collaboration with Teotl Studios. The player finds themselves on an unknown alien planet, trying to survive in a hostile environment whilst gradually uncovering the remains of an ancient civilisation.
Grip Digital also contributed to the console versions of The Unfinished Swan, an unusual adventure game featuring minimalist graphics and exploration of the surrounding environment.
The studio’s portfolio also includes work on console releases of a number of other independent games. Indeed, porting and optimising titles for various platforms constituted a significant part of the company’s activities.
The studio also published some games under its own brand and gradually expanded its activities from purely technical development to the more comprehensive production and publishing of independent titles.
In 2018, the company underwent a rebrand and began operating as GRIP Studios. The company subsequently evolved further, and its activities became intertwined with those of the publishing company Good Shepherd Entertainment.
Grip Digital is one of the most interesting players in the Czech games industry, having made a name for itself primarily through international collaboration. Thanks to projects such as Tower of Guns, Mothergunship and The Solus Project, as well as a number of console ports, the studio has helped bring a range of independent games to players on PlayStation and Xbox.
