Haemimont Games

Haemimont Games is a Bulgarian game development studio founded in 1997 and based in Sofia. It is one of the best-known game studios to come out of Bulgaria and, throughout its history, has focused primarily on strategy games, city-building simulations and action RPGs for both PC and games consoles.

A significant part of the studio’s history is represented by the Tropico series. Haemimont took over its development with Tropico 3, in which the player becomes the ruler of a small Caribbean island. They must build cities, manage the economy, look after the inhabitants and, at the same time, navigate political relations.

The studio subsequently also developed Tropico 4 and Tropico 5. The series combines city-building strategy with economics and politics and is characterised by its satirical humour and the character of the dictator El Presidente.

However, Haemimont Games did not only create strategy games. Among its best-known action games is Victor Vran, an action RPG set in a dark fantasy world. The player takes on the role of the demon hunter Victor Vran and battles hordes of supernatural enemies.

Victor Vran offers fast-paced combat, a wide array of weapons, special abilities and gear. Unlike some traditional action RPGs, it also places greater emphasis on active movement, dodging and precise character control.

The game was later released as Victor Vran: Overkill Edition for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. This edition includes the base game alongside additional content.

Another significant project is Surviving Mars, a base-building strategy game focused on establishing and sustaining a human colony on Mars. The player must ensure a supply of oxygen, water, energy and other resources, and gradually build a self-sufficient colony capable of surviving in a hostile environment.

Haemimont Games’ earlier portfolio also includes the historical strategy games Imperivm / Celtic Kings and Imperivm: Great Battles of Rome, in which the studio drew on its experience with real-time strategy and historical settings.

The studio also developed The First Templar, an action-adventure set during the era of the Crusades. The game follows a pair of protagonists on a quest linked to the mystery of the Holy Grail and also features co-operative play.

Other projects include, for example, Omerta: City of Gangsters, which combines the building of a criminal empire with tactical turn-based combat set against the backdrop of American Prohibition.

Haemimont Games later continued in the base-building genre with the game Stranded: Alien Dawn, in which players lead a group of survivors on a dangerous alien planet and must secure their supplies, defences and long-term survival.

Thanks to games such as Tropico 3–5, Victor Vran, Surviving Mars, The First Templar and Omerta: City of Gangsters, Haemimont Games ranks amongst the leading European studios specialising primarily in strategy, city-building and RPG games.
