The name ILCA is an acronym for ‘I Love Computer Art’, which reflects the studio’s focus on modern graphics technologies, high-quality visuals and the development of games for both consoles and PCs. The studio was founded by Atsushi Shimizu, who previously worked at SEGA.
ILCA initially specialised in supporting the development of major AAA titles. For example, it contributed to games such as NieR: Automata, Dragon Quest XI, Yakuza 0, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, providing technical support, graphics and motion capture.
The studio gained worldwide attention as the lead developer of the remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl for the Nintendo Switch. These games modernised the classic fourth-generation Pokémon titles whilst retaining the original gameplay with updated graphics.
Other notable projects include the RPG One Piece Odyssey, based on the famous One Piece manga and anime, and the action RPG Sand Land, inspired by Akira Toriyama’s work of the same name. Both games have been praised for their faithful adaptation of the source material, high-quality graphics and richly detailed worlds.
