iNiS
Brand's website: iNiSiNiS was a Japanese game development studio best known for its music and rhythm games. During its existence, it created several original titles for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and Xbox 360, and built a reputation as a specialist in games in which music plays a fundamental role.
The studio was founded by Keiichi Yano, a game designer closely associated with many of its best-known projects. iNiS distinguished itself from many other Japanese developers by experimenting with rhythm, music and unconventional control schemes.
🎤 Lips
For Xbox 360 owners, iNiS is best known for the Lips series, which it created in collaboration with Microsoft. The first Lips was released in 2008 and offered a karaoke-style gameplay experience using special wireless microphones.
Players sing well-known songs and the game evaluates their performance. The microphones also contain motion sensors, so certain parts of the gameplay respond not only to the voice but also to the singer’s movements.
The series subsequently continued with further titles, including Lips: Number One Hits, Lips: Party Classics and Lips: I Love the 80s. The latter game focused on popular songs from the 1980s whilst retaining the series’ characteristic karaoke principles.
🎵 Elite Beat Agents
One of the studio’s best-known games is Elite Beat Agents for the Nintendo DS. It is a rhythm game in which the player uses the touch screen to react to markers appearing in time with the music.
The individual tracks are accompanied by comic-style stories. The Elite Beat Agents help various characters solve their problems, and the success of their intervention depends on how well the player masters the rhythm section.
Elite Beat Agents is based on the principles of the Japanese game Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, which was also developed by iNiS. Ouendan received a sequel, Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2.
🎸 Gitaroo Man
Among the studio’s older, well-known projects is Gitaroo Man, originally released for the PlayStation 2. The game combines rhythm-based gameplay with a highly stylised story and music-based battles.
The protagonist, U-1, gains the ability to use the legendary Gitaroo instrument and must face a series of unusual opponents. Each encounter takes the form of a musical battle, in which the player reacts to the rhythm and on-screen prompts.
The game later also received a Gitaroo Man Lives! version for the PSP.
🎮 Specialists in rhythm games
iNiS’s work was characterised by an effort to make the most of the capabilities of specific hardware. The Nintendo DS enabled the studio to incorporate touch controls in *Elite Beat Agents* and *Ouendan*, whilst the Xbox 360, via the microphones in the *Lips* series, provided the foundation for social karaoke gameplay.
Alongside the music itself, the studio often emphasised striking presentation, humour and simple mechanics that were easy to grasp, but required good rhythm and precision to master perfectly.
Thanks to the games Lips, Elite Beat Agents, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and Gitaroo Man, iNiS has established itself as one of Japan’s leading developers of music and rhythm video games. For Xbox 360 players, the studio remains primarily associated with the Lips series, which was one of the leading karaoke titles of that console generation.
