Junction Point Studios

Brand's website: Junction Point Studios

Junction Point Studios was an American video game development studio founded in 2005 in Austin, Texas. It was founded by the renowned game designer Warren Spector, who had previously worked on major titles such as Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief and Ultima.

The studio is best known for its collaboration with Disney and the creation of the game Disney Epic Mickey. Released in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, it offered a significantly darker and more unusual take on the world of Mickey Mouse.

Epic Mickey introduces Mickey to the world of Wasteland, home to forgotten Disney characters and attractions. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit plays a significant role here; he is one of the oldest animated characters created by Walt Disney, even before Mickey Mouse came into being.

The core gameplay mechanic is the magic paintbrush, which Mickey uses to apply paint and thinner. Paint can be used to restore parts of the world and repair certain objects, whilst thinner allows certain elements of the environment to be removed.

The choice between paint and thinner is not merely a means of solving puzzles. The player can resolve certain situations in different ways, and their decisions affect both the characters and the environment. This emphasis on choices and consequences reflects Warren Spector’s experience with RPGs and immersive sim games.

The success of the first instalment was followed by Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two. The sequel expanded on the original concept and added co-operative play, in which a second player controls Oswald.

Mickey continues to use his paintbrush and thinner, whilst Oswald has a remote control that allows him to manipulate electrical devices. The cooperation between the two characters is crucial during battles, exploration and puzzle-solving.

Unlike the first instalment, Epic Mickey 2 was released on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Wii U. It was also Junction Point Studios’ last major project.

Disney announced the closure of Junction Point Studios in 2013. Warren Spector subsequently went on to work on other projects in the games industry and academia.

Thanks to the games Disney Epic Mickey and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Junction Point Studios made its mark on gaming history with its original take on the Disney universe, which combined platforming, exploration, RPG elements and decision-making that influenced the game world.
