Kaos Studios
Brand's website: Kaos StudiosKaos Studios was an American games studio founded in 2006 in New York. It was formed following the acquisition of Trauma Studios by THQ. Trauma Studios had previously made a name for itself through its work on the legendary war shooter Battlefield 1942, which gave the team a wealth of experience in developing modern first-person shooters.
The studio’s first major project was the futuristic military shooter Frontlines: Fuel of War, which was released in 2008 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game presented an alternative future in which the world is fighting over the last reserves of oil, featuring vast battlefields, vehicles, drones and a sophisticated multiplayer mode. It also stood out for its more open-ended approach to missions and its emphasis on modern warfare technology.
The studio’s best-known game became Homefront, released in 2011. The story is set in the United States, which has been occupied by a unified Korea, and follows the resistance of ordinary civilians against the occupying army. The game garnered attention primarily for its original premise, intense single-player campaign and extensive multiplayer mode, which built on the developers’ experience with online shooters.
Kaos Studios focused on realistic weapons, dynamic firefights and teamwork. Its games utilised the modern technology of their time and offered large maps, vehicles and tactical options that appealed to fans of military first-person shooters.
Shortly after the release of Homefront, THQ announced a reorganisation of its development teams, and in 2011, Kaos Studios was closed down. Some of the staff moved to other THQ studios, whilst the Homefront franchise later continued under the leadership of other developers.
Although the studio was only in operation for a few years, Kaos Studios left a lasting impression on fans of modern military shooters. The titles Frontlines: Fuel of War and Homefront remain among the best-known FPS games of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC era.
