LKA

LKA is an independent Italian game development studio based in Florence, specialising primarily in psychological horror and narrative adventure games. Its games are characterised by realistic settings, a dark atmosphere and stories inspired by real historical events.

The studio made a name for itself with The Town of Light, a psychological adventure game set in a former psychiatric hospital in Volterra, Italy. The game is based on research into real psychiatric institutions and the conditions in which patients lived during the first half of the 20th century.

The main character is Renée, a young woman who returns to an abandoned psychiatric facility and gradually uncovers memories of her past. The gameplay is based primarily on exploring the environment, searching for documents and uncovering the story, rather than on traditional action-based combat.

The Town of Light utilises psychological horror in a different way to traditional games full of monsters and supernatural enemies. The unsettling atmosphere is created primarily by human destinies, period treatment methods and the conditions in psychiatric institutions.

Another, even better-known project from the studio is Martha Is Dead, a psychological thriller and horror game set in Tuscany in 1944, during the final stages of the Second World War in Italy.

The story begins with the discovery of the body of a young woman named Martha. The player takes on the role of her twin sister Giulia, who is trying to uncover the circumstances surrounding Martha’s death. Gradually, however, she finds herself drawn into an increasingly complex narrative in which family secrets, trauma, war and folklore intertwine.

Martha Is Dead is built around detailed exploration of the environment, photography, searching for clues and solving puzzles. A key part of the game is the period camera and working with the photographs that the player takes and subsequently develops.

The studio has also paid close attention to historical accuracy. The environments, objects, vehicles, music and other elements are designed to evoke Italy during the Second World War and create an authentic backdrop for the story.

The game is known for its very dark and, at times, graphic scenes and deals with themes of death, trauma and mental health issues. It is precisely this combination of a psychological narrative and realistic visual presentation that has become a hallmark of LKA’s work.

Martha Is Dead was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC, whilst The Town of Light was released on, for example, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Thanks to titles such as The Town of Light and Martha Is Dead, LKA has established a strong position amongst European independent studios specialising in psychological horror, historical settings and story-driven games.
