Llamasoft

Llamasoft is a British independent games studio founded in 1982 by the legendary developer Jeff Minter. It is one of the longest-running independent video game developers and is best known for its fast-paced arcade shooters, psychedelic graphics, electronic music and unmistakable art style.

Jeff Minter began by developing games for home computers such as the Commodore VIC-20, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. Even his early games were characterised by offbeat humour and the frequent appearance of llamas, sheep, camels and other animals, which gradually became a hallmark of Llamasoft’s work.

One of the studio’s most famous titles is Tempest 2000, created for the Atari Jaguar console. This modernisation of the classic arcade game Tempest offered fast-paced vector action, striking visual effects and an electronic soundtrack. The game received an exceptionally positive reception and remains one of Jeff Minter’s best-known projects to this day.

TxK, originally released for the PlayStation Vita, was also developed along similar lines. The game combines classic arcade gameplay with modern effects and intense electronic music. Llamasoft later went on to create Tempest 4000, another modern instalment in the legendary arcade series.

Another notable project is the psychedelic shooter Polybius, which was designed primarily for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. It offers extremely fast-paced gameplay, intense visual effects and levels that gradually become more challenging.

The studio also contributed to a modern reimagining of the arcade game Akka Arrh. The title combines tower defence, shooter and puzzle elements with Llamasoft’s signature psychedelic presentation, and represents a modern interpretation of an unreleased Atari arcade prototype from the 1980s.

Llamasoft holds a unique position in the games industry thanks to Jeff Minter’s more than four decades of work. Games such as Tempest 2000, TxK, Polybius, Tempest 4000 and Akka Arrh are characterised by fast-paced arcade action, experimental graphics and an original design that is easily recognisable amongst other game studios.
