Ninja Theory

Ninja Theory is a British development studio founded in 2000 in Cambridge under the original name Just Add Monsters. Following financial difficulties, it was renamed Ninja Theory in 2004 and gradually established itself as one of the most respected developers of action games focused on strong storytelling, cinematic presentation and realistic character portrayals. Since 2018, the studio has been part of Xbox Game Studios.

Its first major success was the PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavenly Sword, which captivated players with its cinematic storytelling, sophisticated combat and the heroine Nariko. This was followed by the post-apocalyptic action-adventure Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which earned acclaim for its story, the relationships between the main characters and its stunning world.

In 2013, the studio created a reboot of the famous DmC: Devil May Cry series, which introduced a younger version of Dante and offered fast-paced combat, stylish action and a more modern take on the series.

However, Ninja Theory achieved its greatest acclaim with the psychological action-adventure Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The game tells the story of Senua, a Celtic warrior suffering from psychosis, and was praised for its sensitive portrayal of mental illness, its outstanding sound design, motion capture and Melina Juergens’s performance. This success was followed by the sequel Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, which took the studio’s technical capabilities even further.

Other well-known projects include the online action game Bleeding Edge and the upcoming horror game Project: MARA, which focuses on a realistic portrayal of the human psyche.

Thanks to games such as Hellblade, Enslaved, Heavenly Sword and DmC: Devil May Cry, Ninja Theory ranks among the most acclaimed British development studios. Their titles for PlayStation, Xbox and PC regularly win awards for their storytelling, voice acting, technical execution and atmosphere.
