Panic Button
Brand's website: Panic ButtonPanic Button is an American game development studio founded in 2007 in Austin, Texas. The studio specialises primarily in porting, optimising and technical development of video games for various gaming platforms. It has become particularly well-known for its challenging ports of major console and PC titles to the Nintendo Switch.
Panic Button has collaborated with a number of major gaming companies and studios, including Bethesda, id Software, MachineGames, Digital Extremes and Psyonix. For many well-known titles, it therefore does not appear as the creator of the original game, but as the studio responsible for its porting and optimisation for a specific platform.
One of its best-known projects is DOOM for Nintendo Switch. Porting the fast-paced FPS, originally developed by id Software, to significantly less powerful portable hardware was a technically challenging task. Panic Button adjusted the graphics, performance and other aspects of the game so that DOOM could also be played in the Switch’s handheld mode.
The studio subsequently worked on DOOM Eternal for Nintendo Switch, another technologically demanding conversion of the famous FPS series.
Its collaboration on the Wolfenstein franchise is also noteworthy. Panic Button contributed to the Switch version of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and also worked on Wolfenstein: Youngblood. This allowed players to enjoy these expansive FPS titles, originally designed for more powerful hardware, on Nintendo’s hybrid console.
Another well-known project is Warframe. This vast free-to-play sci-fi action game from Digital Extremes features a large number of environments, characters and effects, so its port to the Switch required extensive optimisation.
Panic Button also created the Switch version of the popular game Rocket League, which combines arcade football with car battles. The studio’s main priority here was to maintain the smooth gameplay essential for fast-paced multiplayer matches.
Its portfolio also includes work on titles such as Apex Legends, Subnautica, Hob and other games. The studio has experience with PlayStation, Xbox, PC and other platforms, although it has gained the most attention precisely thanks to its Nintendo Switch ports.
Panic Button is therefore a prime example of a developer specialising in technically demanding ports and game optimisation. Thanks to its work on franchises such as DOOM, Wolfenstein, Warframe, Rocket League and other major titles, it has built a reputation as an experienced studio capable of porting demanding games between significantly different gaming platforms.
