Papaya Studio
Brand's website: Papaya StudioPapaya Studio was an American games development studio based in Irvine, California. It was active primarily during the era of the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS consoles and specialised mainly in family-friendly and licensed games.
One of the major franchises associated with the studio is Ben 10. Papaya Studio worked on Ben 10: Omniverse, an action game based on the Cartoon Network animated series of the same name. Players control Ben Tennyson and, thanks to the Omnitrix, can transform into various alien forms.
Each alien has its own abilities that can be used in battles, to overcome obstacles and to solve simple puzzles. Ben 10: Omniverse was released on several consoles, including the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Wii U.
Papaya Studio is also associated with Toy Story Mania!, a family game inspired by the attraction of the same name at Disney theme parks. The game offers a series of arcade-style shooting and skill-based mini-games featuring characters from the Toy Story universe.
Another significant area of the studio’s work was car games based on Pixar’s Cars films. For example, the studio worked on Cars 2 for certain platforms and other projects utilising this popular animated franchise.
Papaya Studio’s portfolio also features other well-known children’s and film brands. The studio has collaborated with major publishers and companies such as Disney Interactive, THQ and D3Publisher.
Alongside licensed projects, Papaya Studio also created its own game, Whirl Tour, which was released for PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube. It is an action-sports title centred on riding and performing tricks on scooters, reminiscent in concept of the skateboarding games of its era.
The studio also contributed to the title Top Gear: Dare Devil for PlayStation 2, which combined car-based action with various tasks and stunt challenges.
Throughout its existence, Papaya Studio focused primarily on accessible console games for younger and family audiences. A significant part of its catalogue therefore consists of adaptations of well-known television and film franchises.
Thanks to games such as Ben 10: Omniverse, Toy Story Mania!, Whirl Tour and other licensed projects, Papaya Studio is one of the American developers most closely associated with the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii console generations.
