Phantom 8 Studio

Phantom 8 Studio was a German independent game development studio based in Berlin. It was best known for creating Past Cure, a narrative psychological thriller combining action-adventure, stealth and horror elements.

Past Cure was released in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The protagonist is Ian, a former elite soldier who, after years of experimentation and imprisonment, is trying to find out what actually happened to him.

Ian suffers the after-effects of mysterious experiments, but at the same time has gained supernatural abilities. For example, he can manipulate time or leave his body and move through the environment in astral form.

However, using these abilities affects his mental state. The line between reality, hallucinations and nightmares gradually blurs, and the player cannot always be sure what is real.

The gameplay combines several different styles. In realistic sections, Past Cure focuses on third-person shooting, close-quarters combat and stealth, whilst other parts of the game shift into surreal psychological horror.

Another key feature is the ability to use Ian’s special abilities during combat and exploration. Time manipulation can help the player during firefights, whilst astral projection allows them to explore certain areas without being directly exposed to danger.

The story gradually delves into Ian’s past, the experiments he was subjected to, and his quest to find those responsible for his condition. His brother Marcus plays a significant role in this, helping Ian with his search.

Past Cure utilises Unreal Engine 4, and Phantom 8 sought to combine a cinematic narrative with the atmosphere of psychological thrillers and classic action gameplay.

The game received mixed reviews upon release, but the studio subsequently released extensive updates that tweaked, for example, the combat system, controls, artificial intelligence and other aspects of gameplay.

Phantom 8 Studio is therefore primarily associated with the title Past Cure, which sought to combine psychological horror, supernatural abilities, stealth and action-packed combat into a single story-driven adventure.
