Piranha Bytes

Piranha Bytes was a German development studio founded in 1997 in Essen. The studio became famous primarily for its expansive open-world RPGs, characterised by high difficulty and freedom of choice. Thanks to its unique style, it gained millions of fans around the world and became one of Europe’s leading RPG developers.

The Gothic series proved to be its breakthrough title, transporting players to a harsh fantasy world full of dangerous monsters, factions and moral dilemmas. The games Gothic, Gothic II and Gothic 3 were acclaimed for their vibrant world, sophisticated character development and the ability to tackle quests in many different ways. To this day, the series ranks amongst the cult classics of the RPG genre.

After losing the rights to the Gothic brand, the studio created a new series, Risen, which offered similar gameplay set in an original fantasy world featuring pirates, magic and ancient civilisations. This was later followed by the sci-fi fantasy series ELEX, which combined futuristic technologies with magic and a vast open world full of factions, dangerous creatures and freedom of exploration.

A typical feature of the studio’s games was minimal guidance for players, an emphasis on exploration, well-crafted dialogue and decisions that influenced the further course of the story. Each faction offered a distinct playstyle, and the world reacted to the player’s actions, which significantly enhanced replayability.

In 2024, after almost thirty years, the studio ceased operations. Nevertheless, its legacy lives on, and the games Gothic, Risen and ELEX are still regarded as some of the best European RPGs of all time.

Thanks to its unique approach to creating open worlds, deep narratives and player freedom, Piranha Bytes ranks among the most significant studios in the history of RPGs. Their titles were released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and they still have a large fan base today.
