Pivotal Games
Brand's website: Pivotal GamesPivotal Games was a British games studio founded in 2000 in the city of Bath in England. The team consisted of experienced developers who had previously worked at Pumpkin Studios, known for the Warzone 2100 strategy series. From its inception, Pivotal Games focused primarily on developing tactical military action games for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC, and later also for the PlayStation Portable.
The studio’s greatest success came with the Conflict series, which ranks among the best-known tactical shooters of its generation. The first instalment, Conflict: Desert Storm, took players into the Gulf War, where they commanded a four-man team of soldiers from the elite SAS and Delta Force units. Thanks to the ability to switch between team members, issue orders and utilise various specialisations, the series gained great popularity.
This success was followed by Conflict: Desert Storm II, Conflict: Vietnam and Conflict: Global Storm, which further developed the co-operative gameplay, team tactics and realistic military missions. The series sold several million copies and remains one of the best-known military action games on the PlayStation 2 to this day.
Alongside the Conflict series, the studio also created the action-adventure game The Great Escape, inspired by the classic 1963 film of the same name. The game combined stealth elements, action and adventure, and faithfully captured the atmosphere of the famous war film.
In 2008, SCi Entertainment (Eidos) decided to close the studio as part of a company restructuring. Although Pivotal Games existed for less than ten years, it left a significant mark on the history of military video games. The Conflict series is still regarded as one of the best tactical action series of its time and continues to enjoy a strong following amongst fans of classic consoles.
