PopCap Games
Brand's website: PopCap GamesPopCap Games is an American game development studio founded in 2000 in Seattle. It is best known for creating accessible puzzle, arcade and strategy games that have appealed to both casual gamers and traditional video game fans.
One of the studio’s first major successes was Bejeweled. This puzzle game, based on matching gems of the same colour, helped popularise the concept now known as match-3. Thanks to its simple rules, short gameplay rounds and gradually increasing difficulty, Bejeweled became one of the most famous casual games of its time.
The original title was followed by Bejeweled 2, Bejeweled 3, Bejeweled Twist and other variants. The series gradually appeared on PCs, mobile devices and many games consoles, including PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo.
Another exceptionally successful franchise is Plants vs. Zombies. The original game combines tower defence-style strategy with a humorous battle between plants and hordes of zombies. The player places various types of plants, each with its own offensive or defensive abilities.
Thanks to its simple premise and gradually expanding possibilities, Plants vs. Zombies became a huge hit. The original game subsequently spawned an extensive series, including mobile sequels and console action titles.
These include Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and Garden Warfare 2, which transformed the original strategic concept into third-person team-based action. Players fight on the side of either the plants or the zombies, choosing from various character classes, each with their own weapons and abilities.
Another very well-known PopCap game is Peggle. The player fires balls onto the playing area, aiming to hit the required coloured pegs. This simple concept is complemented by the physics of bounces and various special abilities of individual characters. This was later followed by, for example, Peggle 2.
The studio also created the Zuma series, in which players shoot coloured balls at a moving chain and try to form groups of the same colour before the balls reach the end.
The PopCap Games portfolio also includes games such as Bookworm, Chuzzle, Feeding Frenzy, Insaniquarium and Heavy Weapon. The studio has thus created a number of franchises that were later ported to a wide range of different platforms.
A significant moment in the company’s history was 2011, when PopCap Games was acquired by Electronic Arts. PopCap thus became part of EA and continued to develop and manage its most prominent brands.
From its origins as a relatively small studio, PopCap has risen to become one of the world’s best-known creators of casual games. Thanks to the Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, Peggle and Zuma series, PopCap Games ranks amongst the developers who have significantly influenced the nature of modern, accessible puzzle video games.
