Rare
Brand's website: RareRare Ltd. is a legendary British games studio founded in 1985 by brothers Tim and Chris Stamper in the town of Twycross in England. Over more than four decades, it has created some of the most influential video games of all time and earned a reputation as one of the most talented development teams in the history of the games industry.
The studio first made a name for itself in the 1980s by developing games for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and NES systems. However, its real breakthrough came in the 1990s during its close collaboration with Nintendo. This period saw the creation of now-legendary titles such as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini and Killer Instinct. These games set new standards in graphics, gameplay and multiplayer.
In 2002, the studio was acquired by Microsoft, making Rare part of Xbox Game Studios. Under its new ownership, the studio produced successful games such as Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark Zero, Viva Piñata, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Kinect Sports, Sea of Thieves and Rare Replay, a collection charting the studio’s history.
Rare is renowned for its ability to create original game worlds, unforgettable characters and innovative gameplay mechanics. Its developers have always placed great emphasis on high-quality level design, technical execution and a unique British sense of humour. Many of the studio’s games have won prestigious awards and remain among the highest-rated titles of their generations to this day.
Today, Rare remains an active studio and continues to develop new projects under the banner of Xbox Game Studios. The online pirate game Sea of Thieves has become a global hit and regularly receives new content, whilst the studio is preparing further ambitious projects for modern platforms.
Thanks to its exceptionally rich history and wealth of legendary games, Rare ranks among the most significant game studios of all time. Its work has had a major influence on the development of platformers, action games, shooters and adventure games, and continues to inspire developers around the world to this day.
