Spiders Studio

Spiders Studio is a French game development studio founded in 2008 in Paris. It specialises primarily in action RPGs, in which it combines epic narratives, character development, combat, world exploration and choices that influence the course of the game.

One of the studio’s first independent projects was the fantasy RPG Faery: Legends of Avalon. This was followed by Of Orcs and Men, developed in collaboration with Cyanide Studio, and Mars: War Logs, a sci-fi RPG set on a colonised Mars.

The world of Mars: War Logs was later expanded upon in The Technomancer. The main protagonist is Zachariah, a warrior with special electrical abilities. The game combines combat, several fighting styles, crafting, companions and decisions that influence relationships with individual factions.

Another significant title is B Bound by Flame, a fantasy action RPG in which the main protagonist is possessed by a demonic entity. Throughout the story, the player decides whether to resist the demonic power or gradually embrace its abilities. These decisions influence both the character’s abilities and their appearance.

The studio’s greatest success came with GreedFall. Set in a fantasy world inspired by 17th-century Europe, this RPG takes players to the island of Teer Fradee. The game places great emphasis on diplomacy, rival factions, companions and the ability to resolve situations in multiple ways.

GreedFall allows players to combine melee combat, firearms, traps and magic. Developing skills such as charisma, science or lockpicking also unlocks alternative options during dialogues and exploration.

Spiders subsequently created Steelrising, an action RPG set in an alternate version of the French Revolution. In it, Paris is terrorised by King Louis XVI’s mechanical army, and the player controls the automaton Aegis, who must stand up to the king’s machines. The game features more pronounced ‘soulslike’ elements and a more challenging combat system than the studio’s previous titles.

The studio is also continuing to develop its most successful franchise through GreedFall II: The Dying World, which expands on the world of the original game and offers a new story.

In 2019, Spiders Studio became part of the French company Nacon, under which it continues to develop its own RPGs.

Thanks to games such as GreedFall, Steelrising, The Technomancer, Bound by Flame and Mars: War Logs, Spiders Studio ranks among the best-known French developers of narrative action RPGs.
