Spike Co., Ltd. was a Japanese games studio founded in 1989. During its existence, it built a reputation as one of Japan’s leading developers of action, adventure and fighting games. The studio developed titles for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and other platforms.

Spike achieved its greatest popularity thanks to the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series. These 3D fighting games faithfully recreated the battles from the popular Dragon Ball anime and offered a huge number of playable characters, expansive arenas and dynamic combat featuring iconic attacks. The series became one of the most successful video game adaptations of the Dragon Ball franchise.

Another significant series from the studio is Way of the Samurai, which offered players a more open-ended approach to samurai adventures. Thanks to player-driven choices, multiple story endings and a sophisticated combat system, the series has achieved cult status amongst fans of action RPGs.

Spike is also behind the well-known wrestling series Fire Pro Wrestling, which is prized for its deep gameplay, extensive character customisation options and realistic match system. In 2012, Spike merged with the publisher Chunsoft, forming Spike Chunsoft, which continues to develop successful series to this day, including Danganronpa, AI: The Somnium Files, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code and localisations of FromSoftware’s games for Western markets.

Thanks to its successful fighting games, samurai adventures and original Japanese RPGs, Spike ranks among the most significant Japanese studios of its generation. Its games remain popular amongst PlayStation fans to this day and form an important part of the history of the Japanese games industry.
