Team Ninja

Team Ninja is a legendary Japanese development studio founded in 1995 as an in-house team at Koei Tecmo (formerly Tecmo). Based in Yokohama, the studio is one of the world’s most highly regarded creators of action games. It is best known for its fast-paced combat systems, high difficulty levels and technically sophisticated gameplay.

Its first major success was the Dead or Alive fighting series, which gained popularity thanks to its dynamic combat, interactive arenas and fluid animations. The series has gradually expanded to include several sequels and spin-offs, including the beach-themed Dead or Alive Xtreme series.

Team Ninja earned worldwide recognition thanks to the modern Ninja Gaiden series, in which players control the legendary ninja Ryu Hayabusa. The games are known for their exceptionally challenging battles, fast-paced action and sophisticated combat system, making them classics of the hack-and-slash genre.

In 2017, the studio released the action RPG Nioh, which combined Japanese history, mythology and elements of the soulslike genre. The game’s success led to the creation of the sequel Nioh 2, which further developed the combat mechanics and character customisation options.

Building on its experience with the soulslike genre, the studio released Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, set during the Chinese Han Dynasty, and the open-world action RPG Rise of the Ronin, which transports players to late Edo-period Japan and offers a vast open world with a historical backdrop.

Team Ninja is renowned for its precise combat design, deep gameplay mechanics and emphasis on technical quality. Their games are regularly ranked among the highest-rated action titles and have influenced the development of many modern fighting and action games.

Thanks to the Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Nioh, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Rise of the Ronin series, Team Ninja ranks among Japan’s most prominent game studios. Their titles are available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
