The Collective
Brand's website: The CollectiveThe Collective was an American games studio founded in 1997 in Newport Beach, California. During its existence, the studio built a reputation as an experienced developer of action games and titles based on well-known film and television licences. Its games were released on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC and other platforms.
It achieved its first major success with the game Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was very well received by both players and critics for its faithful adaptation of the popular TV series. This success was followed by the sequel Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds, which offered more sophisticated combat, a co-op mode and the option to play as several well-known characters.
Among the studio’s best-known projects is also Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb, one of the highest-rated games featuring the legendary archaeologist. Players particularly appreciated the cinematic atmosphere, the adventurous locations, the action-packed combat and the high-quality adaptation of the famous franchise.
The Collective is also behind titles such as Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, The Da Vinci Code and Harker, which, although an ambitious project for the studio, was never completed. The developers were known for their ability to combine action, adventure and cinematic storytelling into engaging gaming experiences.
In 2005, the studio merged with Shiny Entertainment and TDC Games to form Foundation 9 Entertainment, one of the largest independent development groups of its time. Later, The Collective merged with Backbone Entertainment to form Double Helix Games, which continued to develop games until it was acquired by Amazon in 2014.
Although the The Collective brand no longer exists, the studio has left a significant mark on the history of video games. Its titles are among the most popular action-adventure and licensed games of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox era and still hold a special place in the hearts of fans of classic video games.
