Tokyo RPG Factory

Tokyo RPG Factory is a Japanese development studio founded in 2014 as an in-house team at Square Enix. The studio was established with the aim of building on the golden age of classic Japanese RPGs from the 1990s and creating modern games inspired by legendary titles such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Secret of Mana.

The studio’s first project was the RPG I Am Setsuna, which garnered attention for its emotional story, melancholic atmosphere and a combat system inspired by Chrono Trigger. Players accompany a young girl named Setsuna on a perilous journey to save the world from destruction.

This success was followed by the adventure RPG Lost Sphear, which expands on tried-and-tested gameplay principles with a more sophisticated combat system, character customisation options and an original world threatened by a vanishing reality. The game retains the classic style of Japanese RPGs whilst introducing new gameplay mechanics.

The studio’s third major project is the action RPG Oninaki, which differs from its previous games with its real-time combat system. Players take on the role of Kagachi, the guardian of souls, who journeys between the worlds of the living and the dead, battles demons and uncovers a profound story about life, death and reincarnation.

Tokyo RPG Factory is renowned for its beautiful soundtracks, emotional stories and respect for classic Japanese RPGs. Their games combine traditional gameplay mechanics with modern technical execution and appeal primarily to fans of older Square Enix titles.

Thanks to games such as I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear and Oninaki, Tokyo RPG Factory has established a firm foothold amongst modern Japanese RPG developers. Their titles are available on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.
