Turtle Rock Studios

Turtle Rock Studios is an American game development studio founded in 2002 in Lake Forest, California. The studio specialises primarily in co-operative action games and first-person shooters. Thanks to its emphasis on teamwork, dynamic gameplay and high replay value, it is one of the most highly regarded developers in this genre.

The studio’s greatest success came with the Left 4 Dead series, which revolutionised the cooperative zombie game genre. In the game, four players fight together against hordes of infected enemies and try to survive their way through dangerous locations. The game introduced the revolutionary AI Director system, which dynamically adjusts the difficulty, enemy placement and pace of the game based on the players’ performance, making every playthrough unique.

Following the success of Left 4 Dead, the studio created the asymmetrical multiplayer action game Evolve, in which four hunters work together against a single player controlling a giant monster. Later, Turtle Rock Studios returned to its roots with the shooter Back 4 Blood, the spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series, which offered modern graphics, a card-based character customisation system and intense co-operative battles.

The studio also contributed to the development of the original Counter-Strike mod for Half-Life, the game Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and collaborated with Valve on several other projects.

Thanks to its innovative game mechanics, top-class co-op gameplay and emphasis on teamwork, Turtle Rock Studios ranks among the most prominent developers of modern action games. Their titles are regularly released for PlayStation, Xbox and PC and have millions of fans worldwide.
