UEP Systems

UEP Systems was a Japanese development studio active primarily in the 1990s, which specialised in sports video games for the PlayStation and other platforms. It achieved its greatest fame with the Cool Boarders snowboarding series, which was among the first successful winter sports games on the PlayStation and helped popularise snowboarding amongst players worldwide.

The Cool Boarders series offered fast-paced arcade gameplay, colourful courses, a wealth of tricks and unlockable content. Thanks to its smooth controls and entertaining gameplay, the individual instalments became some of the best-selling sports games of their time and contributed significantly to the success of the first-generation PlayStation console.

Alongside the snowboarding games, the studio also created the football series World League Soccer, which offered fast-paced arcade gameplay, international teams and simple controls. Although it was not as well-known as rival football series, it gained a number of fans thanks to its accessibility and entertaining matches.

UEP Systems focused on sports games with an emphasis on fast-paced action, intuitive controls and broad accessibility for all players. Their titles were particularly popular during the PlayStation’s heyday, when they were among the best-known sports franchises.

Although the studio is no longer active, its games – particularly the Cool Boarders series – remain an important part of the history of sports video games. Thanks to them, UEP Systems carved out a place for itself amongst the leading Japanese developers of the 1990s and is still remembered today by fans of retro games.
