Zaxis Games

Zaxis Games is a Danish video game development studio based in Holte, Denmark. Zaxis’s history dates back to 1999, and the studio gradually shifted its focus from CGI and other digital projects to video game development.

The studio’s best-known title is the action-adventure game Fimbul, inspired by Norse mythology. The story is set during the Fimbul Winter, which, according to legend, precedes Ragnarök. The player takes on the role of an old berserker and embarks on a perilous journey to Jötunheim, where they battle Vikings, trolls and the giant Jötuns.

Fimbul combines action-packed combat with a story told through stylised comic-book scenes. An interesting feature is the decision-making system, which allows players to return to key moments in the story and try a different path. The game was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Another well-known project is 99 Levels to Hell, on which Zaxis Games collaborated with B-evil. It is an action roguelike platformer with procedurally generated levels. Players navigate dangerous dungeons, acquire weapons and upgrades, and gradually battle increasingly powerful enemies and bosses.

Zaxis’s portfolio also includes smaller projects, such as Harry the Fairy, Marco Macaco and Angry Viking. Throughout its history, the studio has experimented with various platforms and game genres.

Thanks to the games Fimbul and 99 Levels to Hell, Zaxis Games has established itself as one of Denmark’s independent studios specialising in original action titles. For console gamers, Fimbul is the most significant title, having also been released in a physical edition for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
