The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for PlayStation 5 is a brutal asymmetrical horror game inspired by the cult film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre from 1974. Players are divided into two sides – a group of young victims trying to escape and members of a murderous family who must stop them.

Unlike many other asymmetrical horror games, the group of survivors isn’t pitted against just one killer. Matches are structured as 3 members of the Family versus 4 victims, which significantly alters the tactics of both sides.

🔪 Play as Leatherface and his family

One of the playable characters is the iconic Leatherface, who wields his signature chainsaw. He can destroy certain obstacles and create new passages, thereby making it harder for the victims to hide and escape.

However, Leatherface isn’t the only hunter. Players can also choose other members of the Family, each of whom has their own abilities and a distinct hunting style.

The Family must work together, control key areas of the map and keep an eye out for tracks, noises and other signs of the victims’ movements. Effective communication between members can decide the outcome of the entire match.

🏃 Escape as one of the victims

The other side offers a markedly different way of playing. Victims start in captivity and their main objective is to get out of the danger zone alive.

It’s not enough just to run away. Players must explore the environment, search for necessary items, unlock paths and make use of cover. Noise can give away their position, so a cautious and stealthy approach is often safer than a headlong dash.

Each victim has their own characteristics and special abilities. Some are better suited to stealthy progression, whilst others may be better at overcoming certain obstacles or assisting other members of the group.

🩸 The atmosphere of the original film

The developers drew inspiration not only from the story itself, but also from the visual style of the 1974 film. The environments, props and overall atmosphere evoke the grimy and unsettling look of the original film.

The game features familiar locations, including the family home and its surroundings, which have been expanded to serve as vast multiplayer maps with multiple escape routes.

The tension is heightened by the fact that victims cannot simply fight the killers as in a classic action game. Far more important are stealth, knowledge of the map, finding the right route and cooperation.

The game is being developed by Sumo Digital, whilst the publisher is Gun Interactive, which also has experience with asymmetrical horror games thanks to Friday the 13th: The Game.
