Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is a PlayStation 1 (PS1) space fantasy action-adventure game published by LucasArts and based on the film of the same name. The game is set in several different worlds seen in the film, and features RPG elements along with a mostly adventure action gameplay style. The project was more open-ended than most 3D games of the time and was particularly innovative for its decade. The game takes place during the timeline of the film, with players taking on the roles of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and several other characters from the film. Each playable character has a unique weapon and abilities. The game also features open environments that can be explored and dozens of NPCs with unique dialogue.

The player is able to control either Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Amidala or Captain Panaka, depending on the level. When playing as one of the two Jedi, the player can use a lightsaber or perform a force hit in addition to using blasters, proton missile launchers, and explosives (which are available for Amidala and Panaka). The player can also encounter other player characters. Throughout the game, the player fights Darth Maul, Federation battle droids, AATs, Tusken raiders, etc. This game was among the first 3D Star Wars games to feature lightsaber duels.
