Disney's Hercules for the PS1 is mainly two-dimensional, although in many missions the player can walk on 3D paths or stairs. There are ten levels and three difficulty modes: beginner, intermediate and hercules.

The player's health can be increased by collecting Hercules figurines (also known as Herculades) and drinking Hercules cups, which occur throughout the game. The player's main weapon is the sword; Hercules can also strike with his fist, but this is a much slower way to defeat enemies. Weapons known as Gifts of the Gods can be found throughout the game,such as the Lightning Sword (shoots lightning in any direction), the Fireball Sword (shoots fireballs that seek out enemies on the screen), and the Sonic Sword (affects enemy targets in close range with a circular sonic blast). There is also a helmet that activates several seconds of invulnerability for the player. Enhancements have limited activity and once their energy is depleted, they can no longer be used.

In many levels there are hidden letters which, when collected, form the word HERCULES and allow the player to skip directly to the next level. There are also four hidden vases in each round which, when picked up, will give the player a password to save the position. Most bosses cannot be defeated by conventional combat and require the player to perform special actions. Among the enemies Hercules faces are Nessus Centaur, Minotaur, Harpies, Hydra, Gorgon, Hades, several Titans, and Cyclops.
