Van Helsing is a third-person action-adventure game for PlayStation 2 and Xbox based on the 2004 action-horror film of the same name by Stephen Sommers. Starting with the killing of Mr. Hyde in Paris, the character of Van Helsing must be used to hunt down Dracula in Transylvania. The character of Carl from the film is completely absent, but the characters of Anna Valerious, Velkan Valerious, Igor, Dracula and his three brides are accurately portrayed.

Van Helsing is able to carry a variety of weapons, some similar to those in the film. Each weapon, except for the elephant cannon, has its own ammunition upgrade in the game, similar to Devil May Cry. Normal ammo is unlimited, and using normal ammo increases the length of the ammo upgrade. Van Helsing can collect up to three life boosters, three ammo boosters, and three speed boosters. After every five kills, Van Helsing can perform a "finishing move" that kills a sixth enemy in one hit. Special enemies, such as any of the Brides, the Great Wolf, Dracula, or Igor, do not respond to the finishing move. In addition to the main enemies, the list of enemies Van Helsing encounters throughout the game includes skeletons, flying skulls, small werewolves, sword-wielding skeletons, bats, Dracula's children, stone statues, etc.

One of the books in the library also mentions the "Belmont family", which refers to the Castlevania game series. Another book mentions the assassination of Pharaoh Seti I by the high priest Imhotep, a reference to the movie The Mummy, which was directed by the same director as Van Helsing.
