Sgt. J. Keller is a black op and he just had an operation go wrong - and badly. He's been arrested and is being interrogated to uncover his mission and find out what went wrong. The player goes through Keller's failed operation in eight areas, wasting enemy soldiers and trying to stay alive. There are primary and secondary objectives, such as reaching the rendezvous point and gathering information.

Black for PS2 is a traditional first-person shooter with a variety of weapons and interactive scenery - interactive in this case meaning destructible. Enemy soldiers can be killed, for example, by destroying a nearby fuel tank, and weak cover such as a wooden fence can be shot to pieces to expose the enemy.

The game can be played in four difficulty levels: easy, normal, hard and black ops. In easy mode, only the primary objective needs to be completed. In normal and hard mode, some of the secondary objectives are required. In black ops mode - which is unlocked after completing the game on hard difficulty - all objectives must be achieved. New weapons are also unlocked upon completion of the level
