TimeSplitters is a fast-paced, action-packed FPS shooter for the PlayStation 2, released in 2000 as one of the console's launch titles. The game was created by Free Radical Design, a studio founded by former GoldenEye 007 developers , and because of this it retains a similar style of gameplay with an emphasis on fast-paced movement and arcade action. The story takes place across different historical periods, from ancient Egypt to a futuristic future where players battle against alien creatures known as TimeSplitters. Each mission introduces a different time period, new characters and weapons, with the main goal being to collect an artifact and get back to safety.

The game is best known for its split-screen multiplayer, which allows up to four players to compete in different modes such as deathmatch or capture the bag. TimeSplitters also includes an extensive map editor that allows players to create their own levels and share them with others. Although the game lacked a sophisticated story mode, its fast and fun gameplay, diverse characters, and unique style made it one of the most popular FPS titles on the PS2. The series later continued with the more successful sequels TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, which brought a deeper story and improved graphics.
