Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future is the fourth installment in the Ecco Dolphin series. Defender of the Future has a story that has no ties to the original Mega Drive/Genesis titles, hence the reboot.
The game is quite similar to the old games, except that it is in three dimensions. Ecco sonar is there as a means of interacting with other cetaceans and certain environmental objects.
Some new changes are introduced in Defender of the Future, one of which is a quick 180° rotation, useful for battles. Another change is a quick stop. The third change is surfacing; Ecco can lift his upper body out of the water to look at things above the surface.
