Soldier of Fortune: Gold Edition for PlayStation 2 is a first-person action shooter in which the player takes on the role of mercenary John Mullins, a former member of the special forces who works for a secret organisation called The Shop. The goal is to stop an international terrorist network that is trying to obtain weapons of mass destruction. The game takes you to various corners of the world – from New York to Siberia to Iraq – and in each location you will encounter dangerous enemies in dynamic and violent combat. A distinctive feature is the so-called GHOUL system – a revolutionary mechanic that allows for extremely detailed injuries to opponents (e.g. limb amputation), giving the game its notorious brutality.

The PS2 version is based on the PC original but features several improvements, including expanded multiplayer and additional missions. Graphically, the game uses a modified Quake II engine, but unfortunately suffers from lower texture resolution, occasional slowdowns and imprecise controls on the console. Nevertheless, it retains the intense atmosphere of a war operation, intense action and simple, straightforward gameplay. Soldier of Fortune: Gold Edition is suitable for players who are looking for uncompromising bloody action and want to experience the cult experience of the turn of the millennium in console form.
