Fallout 3 is the sequel to the successful Fallout RPG series. It was first developed by Black Isle Studios, the company behind the previous two installments, under the codename Van Buren, but the company was owned by Interplay Entertainment, which went bankrupt and sold the rights to the game to Bethesda Softworks, the company behind the highly successful Elder Scrolls series. This company began work on Fallout 3 in July 2004, but major development was put on hold until The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released.
