The story of "The Last of Us Part II" takes place five years after the events of the first game and twenty-five years after the announcement of the pandemic that struck the world. The game alternately focuses on two main characters - Ellie, the now nineteen-year-old girl that players were able to play in the original game, and a new character named Abby.

While the game stays true to its original foundation as a stealth action-adventure game, it adds new gameplay mechanics and systems that give players more options and more openness to explore the environment.
