The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is the third instalment in the horror anthology series from Supermassive Games. The game is set in 2003 during the American invasion of Iraq, when a group of American soldiers and Iraqi soldier Salim Othman discover an underground Akkadian temple inhabited by deadly vampire-like creatures. Players control five characters whose survival depends on the player's decisions, which affect the development of the story and the relationships between the characters. The game offers various game modes, including cooperative play, and allows for repeated play with different outcomes.

The game features improved game mechanics such as a freely controllable camera, adjustable difficulty of quick time events (QTE), and the ability to use a light source to navigate dark environments. The game is inspired by films such as Aliens, Predator, and The Descent, as well as the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Players can collect artefacts that reveal possible future events and discover the secrets of the temple through found documents.
