Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 3D platformer starring Sackboy, a character first introduced in the LittleBigPlanet games. One day, the evil clown Vex invades Sackboy's planet Craftworld, the part of the Imagisphere where the Sackfolk live, by literally tearing up the sky and climbing inside. He uses a machine called the Topsy Turver to suck out all the inhabitants. Sackboy is the only one who can escape in a spaceship and steals Vex's plans for what he calls the Uproar, which removes all creativity from the world. The order must be restored by filling in five big words. They have different themes such as "jungle", "retro space age", "rural" or "underwater". The main goal is to collect orbs that dispel Vex barriers so Sackboy can get to the top of the mountain.

Typical platforming consists of attacking enemies, jumping, solving puzzles based on the light environment, and collecting items. Sackboy can jump, roll and catch. The game uses a light, whimsical style where 3D elements are mixed with 2D cutscenes. The 3D element is new to the series, as previous games have used 2.5D. New costumes and emotes are unlocked during this time. There is a certain amount of freedom to explore in different directions. The player is encouraged to search and explore carefully, as the total score for a level is determined by the number of items collected. Some levels provide temporary access to upgrades such as hover boots, boomerang and blaster.

Cooperative multiplayer, both local and online and cross-gen, is available for up to four players. Several levels, called Teamwork levels, can only be completed in co-op mode, but can be skipped when playing alone and are not required to complete the game.
